Diop, M. S., & B. Tréca. 1997. [Sharing a cavity for breeding by the Grey Hornbill Tockus nasutus and the Red-beaked Hornbill T. erythrorhynchus]. Malimbus 19: 1-6. (Lab. d'ornithol., ORSTOM, BP 1386, Dakar, Sénégal.)—A single case in 1995, apparently the first observed in Africa of two species in simultaneous occupation of the same nesting cavity. (French, Engl. summ.)

Stoate, C. 1997. Abundance of Whitethroats Sylvia communis and potential invertebrate prey, in two Sahelian sylvi-agricultural habitats. Malimbus 19: 7-11. (Game Conserv. Trust, Fordingbridge, SP6 1EF, UK.)—Tudu habitat (dry farmland with indigenous trees and shrubs) compared to recently coppiced Neem (Azadirachta indica) plantations, by 80 point counts of birds and 110 beating tray samples of invertebrates, in January 1996 in northern Nigeria. Whitethroats and two other warblers (S. cantillans and Prinia subflava), present in tudu, were absent in Neem plantations, while invertebrates were scarcer.

Melter, J., & A. Sauvage. 1997. Measurements and moult of Ruffs Philomachus pugnax wintering in West Africa. Malimbus 19: 12-18. (OAG Münster, Biol. Stn., Coermühle 181, 48157 Münster, Germany.)—Statistical data on leg colour by age; wing, bill, and tarsus length of adults; and moult of outer primaries of first-year birds, from 2094 Ruffs caught in Senegal and Cameroon from 1985 to 1991.

del Val, J.P., J. Castroviejo, & F.J. Purroy. 1997. Species rejected from and added to the avifauna of Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea). Malimbus 19: 19-31. (C/ Estébanez Calderón 7, 5ED, 28020 Madrid, Spain.)—Data on 15 species of which the status was clarified, 11 species added and 11 species rejected, as a result of field work between 1989 and 1994 and a bibliographic review.
