Abstracts prepared for Ornithological Worldwide Literature (OWL)

Grimes, L.  2007.  Dialects in the song of the Splendid Sunbird Cinnyris coccinigastra at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, February - April 2004.  Malimbus 29: 1-15.   (3 St Nicholas Ct., Warwick CV34 4JY, U.K. <lgrimes"at"freeuk.com>.) —Repeats and confirms a similar study conducted 30 years previously at the same place, in which several dialects were identified on the campus, though the dialects are now different.  Defines dialects from visually distinct and reproducible patterns in spectrograms and time differences between consecutive notes, but reports no statistical analysis.

Green, A. A., P. Hall, & A. P. Leventis.  2007.  Avifauna of Omo Forest Reserve, SW Nigeria.  Malimbus 29: 16-30.  (178 Patten Rd., Shelburne Falls, MA 01370, U.S.A. <greenarthura"at"hotmail.com>.)—Compiles records over a long, imprecise period (1980 - 2000?) and estimates abundance for 210 species.

Diawara, Y., et al.  2007.  [New data on the breeding and wintering of Greater Flamingos Phoenicopterus roseus in Mauritania and confirmation of exchanges with Mediterranean colonies].  Malimbus 29: 31-41.  (Parc National du Banc d’Arguin, BP 5355 Nouakchott, République Islamique de Mauritanie. <ydiawara"à"yahoo.fr>.) —Data from aerial surveys in 2003-4 showed nesting at one location on the Banc d’Arguin in numbers comparable to previous years.  Similarly, total wintering numbers along the Mauritanian coast have held up.  The reading of ring numbers from a mobile hide proved that birds ringed in Europe nest in Mauritania. (French, Eng. summ.)
