Dean WRJ & LeMaitre DC. 2008. The birds of the Soyo area, northwest Angola. Malimbus 30: 1-18. (DST/NRF Ctr. Excellence Percy FitzPatrick Inst. African Ornithol., Univ. Cape Town, Rondebosch, 7701, South Africa.)—Summarize observations (numbers, habitats, breeding) of 114 species made during 18 days, May & October 2006 in first survey since 1957. Also list 103 species that could potentailly occur based on old records from neighbouring areas. Extend known ranges south from Cabinda (c. 100 km), or north from Bengo Province (c. 300 km), of Ardea goliath, Turtur chalcospilos, Colius castanotus, Eurystomus glaucurus, Tockus alboterminatus, Turdoides jardineii & Anthreptes gabonicus.

Lachenaud O, Oosterhuis H-J, Boedts B & Gunningham J. 2008. [New bird observations in Ivory Coast]. Malimbus 30: 19-29. (1070 Ave. De Fès, 34080 Montpellier, France; EM: olivier.lachenaud"à"laposte.net.)—Summarize hitherto unreported observations on 68 species made by the authors while residing in Ivory Coast between 1977 and 2002, dealing with species rarely observed in the country, range extensions, new breeding data and additions to the avifauna of protected areas (PN de la Marahoué and Réserve de Lamto). First breeding reports in IC for Phalacrocorax africanus, Ardeola ralloides, Bubuculus ibis & Egretta intermedia and range extensions to the south of Hieraaetus spilogaster, Ptilopachus petrosus, Columba guinea, Streptopelia vinacea, Lybius bidentatus, Amanda subflava & Vidua chalybeata. Second country record for Xenus cinereus. (French, Engl. summ.)

Jensen FP, Christensen KD & Petersen BS. 2008. The avifauna of southeast Niger. Malimbus 30: 30-54. (Orbicon, Ringstedvej 20, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark.)—Based on own observations (during 39 days on dates between 30 Jul and 7 Oct in 2002, 2003 and 2005) and previous published and unpublished data, list 250 species, giving abundance estimates for c. 164 species and density estimates (birds per km2, measured during 5 days in 2003 and 5 days in 2005) for c. 107 species. Record large post-breeding congregations of Bubuculus ibis, Ciconia abdimii, Butastur rufipennis, Coracius abyssinicus & Tockus nasutus feeding mainly on grasshoppers. Note large numeric declines in vultures, Terathropius ecaudatus, Sagittarius serpentarius & Leptoptilos crumeniferus. First country record for Prinia fluviatilis. Propose establishment of a new IBA.

Buij R. 2008. The lowland raptor community of the Gamba Complex of Protected Areas, Gabon. Malimbus 30: 55-64. (Monitoring Assessessment Biodiversity. Prog., Natl. Zool. Pk., Smithsonian Inst., 1100 Jefferson Dr. SW #3123, Washington DC 20560-0705 U.S.A.)—Reports results of surveys during 257 days June 2004 - January 2005 and July 2006, mainly in forested areas, on foot along forest trails, from slow-moving car along roads and from boats on rivers. Gives observations on status, abundance, locations, breeding (Aviceda cuculoides, Gypohierax angolensis, Accipiter tachiro, Urotriorchis macrourus, Buteo auguralis, Spizaetus africanus), behaviour & food for 23 raptor species.

Faure C, Maisels F, Christy P. 2008. Great Blue Turacos Corythaeola cristata eating filamentous algae in Gabon. Malimbus 30: 65-70. (14, rue Blaise Pascal, 31850 Montrabe, France; EM: f-chris"at"hotmail.fr.)—Report detailed observations during 133.5 hours over 26 days May - July 2007 of behaviour of up to 5 turacos eating algae growing on the bottom of a shallow stream and argue that this is a much more important food, and source of sodium and protein, than previously recognized.

Jones L. 2008. Reichenbach's Sunbird Anabathmis reichenbachii a new Benin record, and other interesting coastal observations. Malimbus 30: 71-73. (Dept. Plant Wildl. Sci., Brigham Young Univ., 136-WID, Provo, UT 84601, U.S.A.; EM: lrj6"at"byu.net.)—Reports observations made 2-17 Sep 2006, with identification details, of Falco naumanni, Columba guinea, Anthreptes gabonicus, Anabathmis reichenbachii & Ploceus aurantius.

Bell CP. 2008. Lipid metabolite levels among pre-migratory Palaearctic songbirds during trhe wet-dry season transition. Malimbus 30: 74-77. (Conserv. Progs., Zool. Soc. London, Regent's Pk., London NW1 4RY, U.K.; EM: chris.bell"at"zsl.org.)—Seeks dependency on date (and finds some) of plasma triglyceride concentrations (14 birds) and fat scores (20 birds) in Sylvia borin, Ficedula hypoleuca, Saxicola rubetra, Phylloscopus sibilatrix, Hipplolais polyglotta, & Sylvia communis, mist-netted at Vom in central Nigeria, Mar-Apr 2007.

King T & Dallimer M. 2008. Low altitude sightings of the Gulf of Guinea Thrush Turdus olivaceofuscus xanthorhynchus on Principe Island. Malimbus 30: 77-81. (Aspinall Found., Port Lympne Wild Anim. Pk., Hythe, Kent CT21 4PD, U.K.; EM: ppgscience"at"yahoo.com.)—12 observations in primary rainforest 100 - 210 m, 19-24 Jan 2002. Argue for species status and need to conserve habitat.
